IT’S a Southampton boozer with an owner passionate about offering a community atmosphere.

The Angel is a city pub offering traditional brews, lively customers, a pool table and football on the telly.

But owner Jason Palmer wants to keep pushing the pub to become the best it can be.

The 47-year-old from Southampton took on the pub almost two years ago and has completely changed the interiors.

He said: “When I came here I wanted to put my mark on the place and really give it a boost. It looked a bit drab and dirty, had a bad reputation in the area and it was a bit messy so I gave myself a mission to make it better.”

Now the pub has a flat screen television for when Saints play, a pool table which is used by two pub teams, a new bar and Jason has opened it up to offer customers the building for parties or special events.

Jason added: “This is definitely a place to be proud of now, there is a real feeling of community which I love and everyone feels comfortable and happy here there is always a bit of a buzz about the place.”

The Angel is now becoming a popular spot in the city centre for people to come after a football match, students to start their night out or families who want to use the pool table.

Jason said: “There’s a real mixture of people that come in but there’s always someone here to have a chat with and enjoy a pint which I think is what I like most about it, the fact it’s such a social job where you really get to know people in the community.

“I had never run a pub before so this was a bit of a challenge for me but I didn’t want to see the pub go when it was such a great opportunity to really be a part of something, it’s only going to get better from now, I’m really hopeful for the future.”

Beers on offer at the pub include Grolsch, Fosters, Cors and John Smiths and the average price is £3.40, the average cost of a glass of wine is £2.80.
