Lucy Porter and her smash hit Edinburgh Fringe show Choose Your Battles comes to the Forest Arts Centre tomorrow (February 17).

Have you ever wished you’d told that awful boss where to stick that lousy job or dumped an ex before they dumped you?

Life is full of arguments we wish we’d had, or wish we’d won, but it’s also common to regret confrontation.

As someone with a lifelong fear of making a scene, Lucy Porter has always erred on the side of caution when it comes to conflict.

When she was a single, self-employed, stand-up comedian, it was never that much of a problem as she spent 99% of her time alone. Now that Lucy’s a wife, mother and pillar of the local community, she is finding it a lot tougher.

In marriage guidance and parenting manuals, the received wisdom is that you should choose your battles and not sweat the small stuff, but how do you know when to stand your ground?

For example, if a child refuses to go to a wedding unless they can dress as The Incredible Hulk, what should you do?

Lucy decided to take the path of least resistance, only to be faced with a tearful bride and a bill for ruined wedding photos.

Using secret ballots, visual aids and a punchbag with the face of Mary Berry, Lucy works out (with the audience’s help) when she should stick to her guns and fight, and when she can use her disarming charm to defuse a situation.

Lucy is a comedy hit across the globe, taking her distinctive, bouncy, feel-good comedy to Hong Kong, Manila, Switzerland and Paris. She was also invited to Miami to take part in NBC’s Last Comic Standing and has performed in the States for NBC and HBO at their Las Vegas Comedy Festival.

Back home, she has toured the UK multiple times to critical acclaim and played some of the country’s biggest festivals including Latitude and Kilkenny.
