SÓN, Southampton’s professional orchestra, welcome one of the world’s most celebrated pianists, John Lill, to the stage on Sunday as their 2017-18 season continues at Turner Sims.

Performing on the venue’s renowned Steinway, Lill makes his debut appearance with SÓN in Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, part of an all-Beethoven gala including the composer’s Coriolan Overture and one of the best-known pieces in classical music, Symphony No. 5.

The gala performance marks the first in a series of concerts as the orchestra embarks on its Beethoven 20:20 cycle – an epic musical journey exploring all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies and his final three piano concerti, culminating with the Emperor concerto in 2020, timed to coincide with global celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

SÓN’s celebration of Beethoven’s music began in 2016, with a brilliant “unwrapping” of the Eroica by Classic FM presenter John Suchet, followed by a stunning performance of his Symphony No. 7 during SÓN’s Romsey Abbey debut last year.
