SOUTHAMPTON’S new Radio One stars Pioneers have announced a headline show to launch their first EP.
Frontman Sam Watts, drummer Charlie Flide, lead guitarist Toby Gathercole and bassist Bailey Sandom have only been together for a few months, but, after being championed by Radio Solent presenter Stephanie Nieuwenhuys, their first single Take Time made the Radio One playlist as BBC Introducing’s artist of the week.
The upbeat track, which tells the story of a big night out, has been spun by DJs Dev, Scott Mills, Greg James and Clara Amfo. The lads also chatted to Alice Levine about the track.
Now the New Forest band, aged between 19 and 20, have announced a headline show at The Joiners to launch debut EP I’m Not Alright, I’m Fine on Saturday December 2. Tickets £5 at joiners.vticket.co.uk
Pioneers’ first show was at the Junction 6 Beer and Music Festival at The Ageas Bowl in August. Sam and Charlie are students while Toby runs his own dog training business and Bailey is a labourer.
The lads are big fans of Arctic Monkeys and Alt-J, fronted by Southampton’s Joe Newman, and say they’ve been influenced by The Libertines, Blossoms, Jamie T, The Sherlocks and Jake Bugg, who plays Southampton Guildhall in February.
