MORE than 300 competitors met when Eastleigh District Scooter Club organised the southern scooter gymkhana and rally at Fryern Hill recreation ground, Chandler’s Ford on May 19, 1968.
Over 50 clubs took part and the events were watched by more than 1,000 spectators. It was the fifth festival of the kind by the Eastleigh club.
The main attraction was the gymkhana, providing stern tests for scooterists.
Nine girls entered the Scooter Queen contest, the winner being Joan Thorne.
Cups and prizes were presented by the then-mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor AJ Griffen, who fulfilled his last engagement before the mayor-making in Eastleigh that evening.
