Southampton Airport celebrated the launch of new airline, powdair, which will flying to Sion, Switzerland from December 15.

The launch event was held at the new Southampton Harbour Hotel and was open to the public who could ask questions about the new airline and route.

There was also the chance to play on virtual reality equipment, grab a goodie bag and enter a competition to win prizes including a VIP two-night stay at the five-star Guarda Golf Hotel and Residences in Crans Montana, powdair flights and £300 worth of ski equipment.

The brand new airline will operate into the heart of Switzerland’s most popular winter sports region, the Valais and says its average fare prices, of around £140, are cheaper than many of its rivals.

Dave Lees, managing director at Southampton Airport, said: "This new route will give the south coast the chance to reach top ski resorts in less time than ever before and it was great to chat to local residents and passengers today about powdair and what it can offer them. We look forward to welcoming powdair to the airport in December’.

Zoë Ombler, head of commercial for powdair, said: “We were overwhelmed with the support from visitors to our launch event today – Southampton is a hugely popular airport and we are delighted to be able offer four flights per week to Sion from this December. We’re also hoping that demand will be high enough for us to continue the route all year round – perfect for mountain and road cyclists – or anyone wishing to visit the Valais or Portes du Soleil this summer!”
